Non-traditional Education Opportunities!

Mountain Philosophy

Mountain Philosophy is an out-of-the-traditional-mode high school course that involves exploring the deep questions of God’s world while exploring the deep beauty of God’s creation. Students will read books related to the Christian worldview and discuss them with one another while guided by a mentor in Christian thought who is also an explorer of our local mountains. A typical outing will include a three-to-five-mile hike to a waterfall, historical site, scenic overlook, etc. (some of which are not on maps and unknown by the general public) with Q&A discussion along the way, enhanced by a 20-30 minute teaching at the destination. The outings are bi-weekly on Tuesday afternoons, begin early afternoon, and end early evening.

Grandpa’s Workshop

The Christian life is often understood backwards but it must be lived forwards. The male student will spend one day a month (Wednesday or Thursday) working with Grandpa Walker and discussing a reading in Christian life, theology or philosophy (selected in consultation with the student’s parents). The workday may include such activities as car/tractor repair, firewood gathering, home repair, building projects, landscaping, etc. The primary emphasis will be on the passing along of life skills and crumbs of wisdom. Lunch is provided.
